The exterior of St. John Baptist, South Carlton, is largely the 1860 restoration work of S. S. Teulon. The bands of different coloured roof slates are typical of his style.

Inside is a Norman west arch.

Kelly's Directory 1930 reads :-

"The church of St. John the Baptist is an ancient edifice of stone, in the Early English style, consisting of chancel, nave, aisles and a western tower containing one bell :

the church was repaired in 1812, and in 1851 the north aisle was rebuilt :

in 1859 the whole edifice was substantially renovated, at the joint cost of the incumbent, parishioners, and Ecclesiastical Commissioners; the piers of the south aisle, which had been previously walled up, were rebuilt and the chancel paved :

on the north side of the chancel is a chapel containing a monument in alabaster, with recumbent effigies, to Sir John Monson kt. ob. 1593, and his lady, ob. 1625, and under it and an adjoining mausoleum are the ancient burial vaults of the Monson family:

in the south aisle is a memorial window to William Brown esq. and on the west wall a marble tablet to the Rev. R. F. Dixon M.A. 18 years curate here :

the ancient oak rood screen is a good specimen of 15th century wood work, and the choir stalls, also of oak, are mainly of the same period :

in 1920 a five-stop organ and a finely carved pulpit were erected in the church, the former being a memorial to the men of this parish who fell in the Great War, and the latter to the members of the Royal Air Force stationed during the Great War at the aerodrome here, who lost their lives:

there are 130 sittings"

White's Directory 1872 reports :-

"The Church (St. Andrew) is an ancient structure, the north and south aisles of which were taken down in the last century, and rebuilt and the fabric restored at the joint expense of the incumbent, the parishioners, and the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.

In 1860 the piscina, which is very ancient was removed from the chancel to the mortuary chapel, the latter of which is divided from the former by a remarkably fine carved oak screen.

The north side of the building was restored in the year 1851, and under it is a vault, which is still the burial place of the Monsons.

Above the vault is a small chapel in the centre of which is the tomb of Sir John Monson, who died in 1593, and his lady, who died in 1625. Their effigies, in alabaster, lie upon the tomb, on the sides of which were figures of their numerous family; but these were destroyed by the puritans in the civil wars of the 17th century ... "
